I am researching the death of Lt. Joshua Holt. He was a Confederate cavalryman from Shelbyville, Tennessee who was killed in Camden, Alabama on April 23, 1865. He is buried in the Camden Cemetery.

Lt. Holt's grave is marked by an old stone stating that he was "killed April 23, 1865."

The veteran's organization the survivors of his unit formed after the Civil War clearly states in their minutes that Lt. Holt was "killed after surrendering" in Camden.

Does anyone in Camden have any insight as to how or why Lt. Holt was killed? Also, are there burial records from any of the area churches that may list Lt. Holt's burial? Finally, his death was so very late in the war that it may have been considered unusual. Are there any copies of city or county newspapers from this period that may mention such an incident?

Thank you.
